Most running shoe reviews are written after a few runs.
This isn't one of them.
The Puma ForeverRun NITRO 2 has been part of my regular shoe rotation, and after logging 455 miles (732 km) in them, I feel like I've got a genuine understanding of what these shoes are all about.
They have been used for almost everything: easy recovery runs, daily training miles, long runs, steady efforts, faster sessions when I wanted to pick up the pace, wet-weather running, country lanes and even the occasional light trail when my route has taken me away from the road.
A shoe can feel great for the first 20 miles.
The real test is whether it still earns its place after hundreds of miles.
The ForeverRun NITRO 2 has done exactly that.
About the Tester
Before getting into the review, here's some context about me and how I tested these shoes.
Weekly mileage: 20–35 miles (32–56 km)
Running experience: Two completed marathons, 20+ half marathons, countless 10Ks and parkruns over the years.
Running style: Mild overpronator.
Current shoe rotation: Puma ForeverRun NITRO 2, Saucony Endorphin Speed 4 and Nike Pegasus.
Tested over: 455 miles (706 km).
Terrain tested: Roads, pavements, country lanes and light trails.
Conditions tested: Dry weather, rain, wet roads and typical British conditions.
Why I Always Have a Stability Shoe in My Rotation
I always keep a stability shoe in my running rotation.
Because I mildly overpronate, I've found that having a supportive daily trainer helps me stay comfortable and consistent, especially when my training load starts to increase.
In fact, around 80% of my weekly mileage is usually completed in a stability shoe.
After a hard workout, a tough effort session, or simply a couple of demanding training days, my legs appreciate a little extra support. Those are the moments when I naturally reach for a shoe like the ForeverRun NITRO 2.
That background is important because I'm not someone who occasionally wears stability shoes. They are a big part of how I train and what I look for in a daily trainer.
First Run Impressions
Sometimes you know straight away when a shoe is going to work for you.
That was my experience with the Puma ForeverRun NITRO 2.
From the very first run, they felt fantastic straight out of the box. No break-in period was needed. They felt surprisingly light on foot, fresh and comfortable from the first few steps.
What impressed me most was how adaptable they felt.
When I picked up the pace, they responded well and felt more energetic than I expected from a stability trainer. Then, when I backed off and settled into an easier rhythm, they were equally comfortable and supportive.
That first run gave me a very good feeling.
The question was whether they could maintain that feeling over hundreds of miles.
First Impressions and Build Quality
The ForeverRun NITRO 2 feels like a well-made shoe.
The upper feels comfortable, the heel lockdown is secure, and there is plenty of padding without making the shoe feel restrictive.
One thing I really like is that Puma has avoided giving these the traditional bulky stability-shoe appearance.
They look like a modern running shoe rather than a shoe designed purely around support.
Sometimes stability shoes can feel like they have a job to do before you've even started running.
The ForeverRun NITRO 2 feels much more natural.
Price and Value
The Puma ForeverRun NITRO 2 sits in the premium daily trainer category, with a retail price of £140.
I was fortunate enough to pick my pair up in the sale for £90, which, looking back after 455 miles of use, feels like an absolute bargain.
At the full retail price, you are paying for a well-built stability trainer with excellent comfort, good durability and a versatile ride that can handle a wide range of training.
However, finding them for £90 represented fantastic value.
A shoe that has delivered more than 400 miles of comfortable running, handled all weather conditions and remained a reliable part of my rotation is exactly the kind of purchase runners hope to make.
For me, the durability alone makes them a very strong value option—especially if you can find them discounted.
The Ride: Comfortable, Smooth and Reliable
The biggest strength of the ForeverRun NITRO 2 is comfort.
The NITROFOAM cushioning provides a soft landing but doesn't leave you feeling like you're sinking into the shoe. There is enough protection underfoot for longer runs, but it still feels controlled.
After 455 miles, what stands out most is how consistent they have been.
They don't have the aggressive speed feel of a dedicated performance shoe, but they aren't dull either.
They are the shoe you reach for when you want to get out, put the miles in and finish feeling good.
And sometimes that is exactly what you need.
Stability Without Feeling Forced
This is where Puma has done a great job.
Some stability shoes make you feel like they are correcting your stride every single step.
The ForeverRun NITRO 2 doesn't.
The support feels natural and subtle. It guides your foot without becoming the main focus of the run.
For me, that is exactly what I want from a stability trainer.
I don't want the shoe fighting my stride.
I want it quietly helping when fatigue starts to creep in.
During longer runs, or when my legs are tired from previous training sessions, this is where the extra support really becomes noticeable.
How Do They Handle Different Types of Runs?
One of the reasons these shoes have stayed in my rotation is their versatility.
Easy and Recovery Runs
This is where they feel most at home.
The cushioning and stability make them ideal when the goal is simply getting the miles done comfortably.
Long Runs
The ForeverRun NITRO 2 is a dependable long-run shoe.
The comfort holds up well over distance, and the stable platform gives confidence when your form starts to fade towards the end of a run.
Faster Efforts
This isn't a racing shoe.
Compared with something like my Saucony Endorphin Speed 4, it doesn't have the same aggressive feeling of speed.
However, what surprised me was how willing it was when I wanted to pick up the pace.
It has enough responsiveness to make faster efforts enjoyable while still delivering the comfort and support I need for everyday mileage.
Off-Road and Trails
These are primarily road shoes, but I have taken them onto light trails and mixed surfaces.
For gravel paths, country tracks and dry trails, they performed better than expected.
I wouldn't choose them for technical trails, but for runners whose routes naturally include a bit of everything, they are surprisingly capable.
The Grip: A Real Strength
Puma's outsole deserves plenty of credit.
The grip has been excellent throughout my testing.
I've used these in dry conditions, heavy rain and on wet roads, and they have always inspired confidence.
Living in the UK, good wet-weather grip matters.
A shoe that performs well when conditions turn miserable is a huge advantage.
Where Have They Been Tested?
The majority of my 455 miles (732 km) in the ForeverRun NITRO 2 have been completed on roads.
They have seen everything from everyday training miles and recovery runs to longer efforts, quicker sessions and plenty of wet-weather running.
While I have taken them onto light trails and mixed surfaces, the vast majority of their mileage has been on tarmac and pavements—the environment where these shoes are designed to perform best.
After this amount of time on the road, I feel I have a genuine understanding of how they perform as an everyday running shoe.
How Have They Held Up After 455 Miles?
This is always the part I am most interested in when reading a long-term review.
A shoe can feel incredible when new, but how does it perform after months of running?
For me, the ForeverRun NITRO 2 has been exceptional.
I normally don't push running shoes much beyond 400 miles, as that is usually the point where I start noticing changes in cushioning and support.
These have gone beyond that mark and have performed better than many shoes I've owned.
However, after around the 400-mile mark, I did begin noticing some changes.
The cushioning didn't feel quite as fresh, the support wasn't quite as noticeable, and my legs seemed to take a little longer to recover after harder sessions.
That said, this is exactly what I would expect after this amount of mileage.
The fact that they reached 400+ miles while still being a comfortable and reliable trainer is a big positive.
For me, the ForeverRun NITRO 2 has had an excellent lifespan.
Fit and Sizing
Puma running shoes sometimes receive criticism for having a narrower fit compared with some other brands, so I was interested to see how the ForeverRun NITRO 2 would work for me.
The good news?
I've had no issues at all.
The fit has been comfortable throughout, with no hotspots, rubbing or pressure points during any of my runs.
They felt secure without feeling restrictive, and the sizing has been spot on for me.
Of course, everyone's feet are different, but based on my experience, I would say they fit true to size.
What I Like
✅ Excellent comfort over long distances
✅ Stability without feeling intrusive
✅ Fantastic grip in wet conditions
✅ Durable construction
✅ Great daily trainer for consistent mileage
✅ Comfortable when legs are tired
✅ More versatile than many stability shoes
What Could Be Better?
No shoe is perfect.
The ForeverRun NITRO 2 is not the lightest trainer available.
If your main goal is chasing personal bests or running fast intervals, there are better options.
At the full retail price of £140, they are certainly an investment. However, after 455 miles, I think the durability and versatility go a long way towards justifying that cost.
If you can find them discounted, they become an even more attractive option.
Where It Fits In My Rotation
Every shoe has a job.
My Saucony Endorphin Speed 4 is the one I reach for when I want a faster, more energetic session.
My Nike Pegasus is the reliable all-rounder that can handle almost anything.
The Puma ForeverRun NITRO 2 has become the dependable comfort option—the shoe I trust when I want support, protection and confidence.
Especially when my legs aren't feeling their freshest.
Keith's Long-Term Verdict
Would I Buy Them Again? Yes, and I think that says a lot.
After 455 miles, they have earned their place in my rotation.
They aren't the fastest shoe I own, and they aren't designed to be. What they are is a reliable, comfortable and supportive daily trainer that makes running feel easier.
For runners who overpronate, enjoy a little extra support, or simply want a shoe that can handle a wide variety of training, the Puma ForeverRun NITRO 2 is a very easy shoe to recommend.
Would I race a marathon in them? Probably not.
Would I happily train for one in them? Absolutely.
Sometimes the best running shoes aren't the ones that create one amazing run, they're the ones you keep coming back to, week after week.
The Puma ForeverRun NITRO 2 is one of those shoes.
